Lip Fillers in Richmond: Everything You Need to Know

By Mr Xavier Chalhoub · Xavier On The Hill, Richmond

Lip fillers are consistently our most enquired-about treatment at Xavier On The Hill. Whether you're looking for a subtle volume boost, better symmetry, or more defined lip borders, dermal fillers can achieve beautiful, natural-looking results when done well. If you're considering lip fillers in Richmond, here's everything you need to know before your first appointment.

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are injectable treatments using hyaluronic acid — a substance that occurs naturally in your body and is responsible for keeping skin hydrated and plump. The filler is a smooth, clear gel that is carefully injected into specific areas of the lips to add volume, improve shape, or enhance definition.

At Xavier On The Hill, we use Juvéderm by Allergan — the most widely used and extensively studied filler range in the world. Juvéderm is specifically designed for smooth, natural-looking results and has an excellent safety profile backed by decades of clinical research.

One of the reassuring things about hyaluronic acid fillers is that they're reversible. If for any reason you're unhappy with the result, an enzyme called hyaluronidase can dissolve the filler. This is rarely needed, but it provides peace of mind, particularly for first-time patients.

What Can Lip Fillers Achieve?

Lip fillers are remarkably versatile. Depending on the technique and placement, they can:

Add volume — the most common request. Whether you've always had naturally thin lips or have noticed volume loss with age, filler can restore fullness while keeping the result proportional to your face.

Improve symmetry — very few people have perfectly symmetrical lips. Filler can be placed strategically to balance the upper and lower lips, or to even out one side relative to the other.

Define the lip border — the vermilion border is the edge where your lip colour meets the surrounding skin. As we age, this border can become less defined, causing lipstick to "bleed." A small amount of filler placed along this border creates crisp, elegant definition.

Smooth fine lines — the vertical lines that develop around the mouth (sometimes called smoker's lines, though they affect non-smokers too) can be softened with precisely placed filler.

Hydrate from within — hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant, meaning it draws and holds moisture. Even a modest amount of lip filler can make lips look and feel more hydrated.

The "Natural Look" Approach

The fear of looking "overdone" is the number one concern we hear from patients considering lip fillers for the first time. It's a completely valid concern — we've all seen examples of lip filler that's been taken too far.

At Xavier On The Hill, our philosophy is to enhance, never exaggerate. Mr Chalhoub's background as a Plastic Surgery Registrar means he understands facial proportions at a deeper level than most injectors. He considers not just the lips in isolation, but how they relate to the rest of your face — the nose, the chin, the overall facial balance.

The best lip filler is the kind that makes people say "you look well" rather than "you've had your lips done." We achieve this by starting conservatively, respecting your natural lip shape, and building gradually if you want more volume over time. It's always easier to add a little more than to take away too much.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Before treatment: Your appointment begins with a free consultation. Mr Chalhoub will examine your lips, discuss what you'd like to achieve, and recommend an approach. This is an open conversation — you might arrive wanting one thing and leave with a different (often more subtle) plan that will actually suit your face better. There's never any pressure to proceed on the day.

If you decide to go ahead, here's what the treatment involves:

Numbing: A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the lips for around fifteen minutes. Juvéderm also contains lidocaine (a local anaesthetic) within the product itself, so comfort continues to improve throughout the treatment.

Injection: Using ultra-fine TSK invisible needles, filler is placed precisely into the areas discussed during your consultation. The entire injection process typically takes fifteen to twenty minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure with occasional brief pinching — far less uncomfortable than they expected.

Immediately after: You'll be able to see the shape and volume straight away, though there will be some swelling that makes the lips look slightly larger than the final result. Mr Chalhoub will show you the result and discuss what to expect over the following days.

Recovery and Results

The first two to three days after lip filler treatment are when swelling is most noticeable. Your lips may feel firm and look slightly larger than intended — this is completely normal and settles quickly. Some patients experience mild bruising, though the use of fine needles and careful technique minimises this risk.

By day five to seven, the swelling has largely resolved and the filler has begun to settle into its final position. The true result is visible at around two weeks, which is when we schedule your complimentary follow-up appointment.

During the healing period, we recommend avoiding intense exercise for twenty-four hours, being gentle when eating and drinking, avoiding alcohol on the day of treatment, and sleeping with your head slightly elevated on the first night. These are precautions rather than strict rules — most patients carry on with their day normally.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

Juvéderm lip fillers typically last between six and twelve months, depending on several factors including your metabolism, how much filler was used, and lifestyle factors like exercise frequency. The lips are a high-movement area (talking, eating, kissing), which means filler tends to metabolise slightly faster here than in other areas of the face.

Many of our Richmond patients come in once or twice a year for a maintenance treatment, which often requires less product than the initial session because some residual filler remains.

How Much Do Lip Fillers Cost in Richmond?

At Xavier On The Hill, lip fillers start from £350 per 1ml syringe of Juvéderm. Most patients need between 0.5ml and 1ml for a natural enhancement — your practitioner will recommend the appropriate amount during your consultation.

This price includes the complimentary consultation, the treatment using genuine Juvéderm filler, and a free follow-up review at two weeks.

When comparing prices across Richmond, remember to check which product is being used, the qualifications of the injector, and whether consultations and follow-ups are included. The cheapest option is very rarely the best option when it comes to lip fillers — this is an area where experience and product quality make a visible difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt? Much less than most people expect. Between the numbing cream, the lidocaine in the Juvéderm product, and the ultra-fine needles, most patients rate the discomfort at around two or three out of ten.

Can people tell I've had filler? Not if it's done well. Our approach prioritises natural-looking results that enhance your existing features rather than creating an obviously "done" look.

What if I don't like it? Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. This is a simple procedure that reverses the filler within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. It's rarely needed, but it's reassuring to know the option exists.

Can I wear lipstick afterwards? We recommend waiting twenty-four hours before applying makeup directly to the lips, just to allow the tiny injection points to close.

Is there anyone who shouldn't have lip fillers? Lip fillers are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have an active cold sore. If you're prone to cold sores, we recommend taking antiviral medication before treatment — this is something we'll discuss during your consultation.
